How does sport mode work?

Driving in sport mode is liberating, fun, and thrilling – especially on the open road. How does sport mode work, and what impact does it have on your car? Do the tyres you choose create a better driving experience in sport mode?

What is sport mode?

Sport mode is a change in the settings of your car that responds to your dynamic driving style and command. Sport mode can help adjust throttle sensitivity, suspension stiffness, handling, and the transmission shift point for you but the actual features may vary among different car brands and models.

Shifting to sport mode boosts the engine performance of your electric or internal combustion engine car on race tracks and long roads. During uphill climbs and descents on inclined terrains, sport mode ensures a safe and confident driving experience with superior traction, stability, and vehicle handling.

Activating sport mode is as simple as shifting the gear to the uppercase letter ‘S’ in cars with manual transmission or pressing the ‘Sport’ button in cars with automatic transmission. This is the equivalent of selecting ‘Sport’ on the touchscreen in electric cars. Features may vary among different car brands and models.

What does sport mode do?

When the sport mode is activated, you are putting the engine’s computer in preparation for an aggressive drive by pumping extra fuel into the engine. This triggers a surge in RPMS and signals the automatic gearbox to bring the engine closer to the power band.

By introducing weight to the steering, sport mode remaps the throttle to help maintain torque at an optimal speed. For a more sensational driving experience, a rigid suspension is achieved through subtle adjustments to the car’s height. Lowered suspension height improves vehicle handling and traction.

Does sport mode use more fuel?

Generally, when driving in sport mode, more fuel is introduced to the car engine to be combusted and converted into power. However, enabling sport mode doesn’t always mean consuming extra fuel because it depends on the design of each specific car model and engine but putting your car into extended periods of constant acceleration can consume more fuel.

Thanks to the sensitive throttle response, you can pick up more speed without having to go hard on the accelerator pedal.

To ensure that the engine oil stays at the right viscosity for maximum performance on the road, your car needs to keep the oil at a lower temperature. Maintaining this temperature adds to your fuel consumption.

Does sport mode hurt your car?

Aside from high fuel consumption, engaging sport mode in moderation is not necessarily bad for your car. However, driving in sport mode for a prolonged period of time can put a strain on the tyres, transmission, shock absorbers, and other car components.

If you often drive in sport mode, Michelin recommends you invest in regular car care and maintenance.

It always helps to choose components that suit your driving style, which includes finding the right tyres. High-performance tyres can transform your driving experience, and match the demands of sport mode driving.

Known for its excellent handling, stability, and braking performance, Michelin’s Pilot Sport 5 comes with a Wear2Check system indicator that monitors tyre wear and dynamic response technology for guaranteed optimal transmission.
